Easley City News, Spring & Summer 2010Mayor’s Message
Welcome to the latest edition the Easley City News. I hope that by the time you have received this edition that old man winter has finally been put to rest, and that the azaleas are beginning to bloom. With everyone as busy as they are we realize how difficult it may be for you to keep abreast of the happenings in Easley. This latest newsletter is an attempt to inform you of several issues in your city.
In this issue you will find some very important information that I hope you’ll take the time to read. One of the articles is about the upcoming Census. I hope that you will take the ten minutes to fill out the Census and return it by the deadline. The Census is an extremely important event and has a lot of impact on the City of Easley, Pickens County, and the State of South Carolina. Some experts believe that South Carolina could earn an additional seat in Congress if the Census numbers support all the additional growth over the last ten years. I’m not sure if another Congressional seat in Washington is a good or bad thing, but I do know that amount of funding the City receives from Washington and Columbia is tied to population. Therefore the higher the City’s population the greater the amount of funding from Washington and Columbia the City shall receive. So please be counted, your community depends on it.
Another article talks about the importance of recycling. You may have recently read some articles discussing efforts by Pickens County to increase the amount of recycling. Many of us already understand the importance of recycling and do recycle in our homes and businesses, but there are some who do not. For those who currently do not recycle please re-consider. Recycling is very easy and is a service the City provides to all residents. Please call 855-7916 to get a free recycling bin.
Included in this newsletter is a series of articles about City employees. As with any organization the City’s strength is in its employees. For 2009 the City recognized Paula Bullock, and Jennifer Jennings as co-employees of the year. Paula and Jennifer go above and beyond each day. This newsletter also recognizes Chief Danny Traber’s thirty year career as a Police Officer for the City of Easley. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being Mayor is working with these talented men and women every day. The City of Easley is truly blessed to have an organization of strong and dedicated employees.
In the last newsletter I wrote about the City’s development agreement associated with the Easley Town Center. I am pleased to see work finally begin on the most significant Economic Development project in the City’s history. Once completed, the Center will create an estimated 900 jobs for our community. Over the next several months you will notice the amount of construction activity increasing as development of the site progresses. I want to thank the many people who helped make this project a reality.
In addition to the activity at the Easley Town Center, this spring the City’s Farmers Market will open for its second season. Members of the Committee are working hard this winter to build on last year’s success. I encourage you to visit on Saturday mornings beginning April 10, 2010.
Thanks for reading the latest edition of The Easley City News, I hope you and your family have a safe summer in 2010.
